Labor fights the road toll with more words and bureaucracy

The announcement of Road Safety Victoria shows that Daniel Andrews has no real plans or ideas to tackle Victoria’s surging road toll.

This is now the third time in just six months that Labor has rebranded or restructured Victoria’s road agencies.

The idea that creating a new layer of overarching bureaucracy will somehow lead to better outcomes is an idea worthy of Yes, Minister or The Hollowmen.

The only idea to emerge from Daniel Andrews’ recent road safety summit was a lazy policy to reduce default speed limits on regional roads to 80km/h, instead of actually fixing the dilapidated roads or fighting alcohol and drug driving.

Last week Labor announced a series of regional community road safety forums. If those forums are to succeed, Daniel Andrews needs to stop telling people what is good for them, and listen to what regional communities actually say.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Road Safety, Gordon Rich-Phillips:

“Yet again, the Andrews Labor Government is wasting taxpayers’ dollars on creating another bureaucracy instead of actually tackling road safety in Victoria.”

“Instead of shifting the deck chairs, Daniel Andrews needs to put forward a legitimate plan to address the road toll.”

“The idea that creating a new layer of overarching bureaucracy will somehow lead to better outcomes is an idea worthy of Yes, Minister or The Hollowmen.”
