Daniel Andrews and Labor costing jobs in regional Victoria

Revelations today that the Andrews Labor Government has refused to renew the Bendigo Mining licence sends another strong signal that Daniel Andrews has no interest in encouraging mining investment in Victoria.

The Victorian economy was originally built on gold mining and the industry is still an important employer in regional Victoria.

However, after slugging the gold mining sector with a shock gold tax in this year’s budget, this recent action sends a clear message to investors that Victoria is closed for business, a move that will cost jobs in regional Victoria.

Labor’s Minister for Resources, Jaclyn Symes, stated in a media release dated 8 March 2019 that:

“We’re supporting success stories like Fosterville (east of Bendigo) to keep producing and employing locals.”

The Minister’s words mean nothing in light of the government’s decision, which will see jobs lost in the Bendigo region and have a significant detrimental effect on the mining industry.

The one thing industry expects from government is certainty.

Given that Daniel Andrews is now refusing to support local gold exploration on top of gouging operational mines with yet another new tax, it is not unreasonable to ask:

Do Daniel Andrews and Labor want to see an end to gold mining in Victoria?
